Just a random set of words with no context. Later, those phrases, if you write them down, find a place in a poem that is the perfect spot for them, much later in the process. In the case of Weather Gathering, the process was inverted: a phrase from the poem Consider the Asp (The Resurrection Men) kept reappearing in my thinking: weather gathering. Oddly, the intent of the phrase in the poem was to refer to something ineffable, a meaning or a half formed thought, or better yet, the vague semblance of an understanding that hasn't quite presented itself fully, but is gradually coalescing somewhere in the back of your mind. As things worked out in the painting, that idea was rising up in visual terms and eventually became the tornado image in the final piece. Words and images, if you let them, start building their own structures, and sometimes something true comes through those structures that wasn't visible before. So the tornado in this painting isn't really a tornado. It's more of a proxy image for the thinking that runs underneath ordinary consciousness that rouses itself into a recognizable figure in your mind. The geographic coordinates in the piece are something I keep coming back to across different paintings and poems. They mark the crossroads in Mississippi tied to the Robert Johnson legend, where he made his infamous pact. With so much of the world being so impenetrable, so resistant to understanding, the arrival of the peregrine ideas I mentioned has become for me a kind of touchstone or pole star that I can attach the rest of my thoughts to and somehow understand my position in things. The idea that there will come more truth, truer understandings, or clearer insights into things that remain mostly opaque and mysterious to me beyond the quotidian routine of simply being here, I find helpful. At the same time it's clear that those epiphanies have a cost attached to them, that they are agents of change and there will be reciprocation, almost in the legal sense; that I will reclaim myself through them, but that some unforeseeable cost will be exacted. I will be both done and undone, ravelled and unravelled by the approaching figures that come in their own time, of their own accord, and with a foreign agenda. https://www.jimgislason.com/gallery/e17b4l7bt8xz31z0bq1ekgb92h362u monthly 0.5 2026-10-24 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/0f101878-d13c-4c24-b3af-ecb7b614d57c/IMG_5950.JPG The Images - Fragment - Make it stand out Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. https://www.jimgislason.com/gallery/the-old-guitarist monthly 0.5 2026-10-25 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/c2ee2877-c81a-4348-b7e8-bfc708f37d57/IMG_5931.JPG The Images - The Old Guitarist - Make it stand out Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. https://www.jimgislason.com/gallery/axes-mundi monthly 0.5 2026-10-25 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/b3391b1f-97c3-41ee-82bd-db74aec28fe6/_DSF6345.jpg The Images - Axes Mundi - Make it stand out (A Lament for Lorca) https://www.jimgislason.com/gallery/consider-the-asp monthly 0.5 2026-10-25 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/1780628109389-AIFF65UOCQNTEOGKY4ER/IMG_5960.JPG The Images - Consider the Asp - Make it stand out Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. https://www.jimgislason.com/gallery/category/Featured monthly 0.5 https://www.jimgislason.com/about daily 0.75 2026-10-05 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/1d0c4598-0bba-48ac-915d-5cdec9663d47/IMG_2782.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/e0bddcd7-ec39-4ec7-88f1-b3b1f852a810/IMG_6515.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/941e5c16-39ad-45e5-94d6-0d541d6c6011/IMG_8153+2.jpeg https://www.jimgislason.com/contact daily 0.75 2026-07-11 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/9a9845d6-25ea-4e9a-b0c3-75ad258a7d25/b5b239c9-b2e7-48b2-9ba8-65b58961e378+2.jpg https://www.jimgislason.com/home daily 1.0 2026-07-11 https://www.jimgislason.com/home-new daily 0.75 2026-09-06 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/699bd167-c471-478d-aadb-23dcaed179fd/IMG_7359.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/e0bddcd7-ec39-4ec7-88f1-b3b1f852a810/IMG_6515.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/a6b8220a-4cc3-4ef0-a9c5-4e99f3ee5686/IMG_7248.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/57e4d3cb-2bf1-4742-a577-271e70e59ec2/IMG_5950.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/7a93c18f-d902-4433-9f89-2ada1dce9d62/Jim.jpg https://www.jimgislason.com/spoken-word daily 0.75 2026-09-06 https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/fc7fdbd3-cbd3-41d5-bdf8-9156d35000ea/playlist.m3u8 https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/fc7fdbd3-cbd3-41d5-bdf8-9156d35000ea/thumbnail Spoken Word Spoken Word https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/52da41a7-21ee-4581-b30c-157333701bf3/playlist.m3u8 https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/52da41a7-21ee-4581-b30c-157333701bf3/thumbnail Spoken Word Spoken Word https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/219b9a30-de3d-45f7-afd3-9b297555d194/playlist.m3u8 https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/219b9a30-de3d-45f7-afd3-9b297555d194/thumbnail Spoken Word Spoken Word https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/748e2202-9c7a-4794-b38b-1b8bbfe2616a/playlist.m3u8 https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/748e2202-9c7a-4794-b38b-1b8bbfe2616a/thumbnail Spoken Word Spoken Word https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/d4983821-872c-48ed-b8da-fffa0006eb87/playlist.m3u8 https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a160263513d227e71938968/d4983821-872c-48ed-b8da-fffa0006eb87/thumbnail Spoken Word Spoken Word
