Noli Me Tangere translates from Latin roughly as “Touch Me Not”. In the Bible, after Christ’s resurrection, Mary Magdalene reaches for him in joy but is rebuffed by a Christ who utters the phrase, not without love, but to instruct that our most crucial relation is not of the flesh but of the spirit: our primary concern is of the heart. Historically there are many depictions of this moment, usually of that very reunion.
